Located in Carto CE, Brazil, the Gomes de Mattos ceramic (GCM) is an avoided wood-fuel harvesting project. This means that the ceramic has switched its practices to ensure using renewable fuels instead of using wood for fuel, which leads to deforestation. Consequently, GCM has reduced its GHG emissions and stopped adding pressure to one of the most vulnerable biomes- the Amazon. Another crucial aspect of the project is the conservation of the natural habitat of the local bird species as well as observation activities. As with all the projects we work with, the GCM has other socio-economic benefits, one of which is the social inclusion strategy, meaning better hiring policies that include women as well as young people and people with special needs. Moreover, the GCM invests in improving the local sports environment by constructing a soccer field for community members. The project also aims to foster an environment for technological development by adopting the best practices in the sector, as well as dissemination activities of the factory’s sustainability practices, this is done through local TV, radio, and flyers.
